Box: RVL —- Major Michale Calvert Recruitment members beyond the Far East Recognising the unit’s early successes, the British protectorate government in Malaya granted Lieutenant Colonel Calvert—who had since been promoted—permission to recruit soldiers from outside the Far East in 1951 in the United Kingdom, where he recruited Z Squadron of 21 SAS, a unit recently formed for the Korean War. This squadron was subsequently integrated into the Malayan Scouts as B Squadron. From Southern Rhodesia there where 1,000 applicants. From his Hotelpool he selected 120 Rhodesian World War II veterans, forming C Squadron of the Malayan Scouts.
